Family Plot (1976)

Basking in the twilight of her life, the affluent Julia Rainbird decides to bequeath her enormous fortune to her only presumed living heir - an illegitimate nephew given away at birth. His identity and location are shrouded in mystery, prompting Julia to enlist the services of her psychic, Madame Blanche, instead of a conventional private investigator. For the successful delivery of her long-lost nephew, Madame Blanche is promised a handsome reward of $10,000. But beneath the façade of the fortune teller, Madame Blanche, real name Blanche Tyler, is a crafty charlatan. Aided by her lover, George Lumley, an actor moonlighting as a taxi driver, they use basic leads to execute their scams. Hungry for the hefty reward, Blanche and George embark on the quest to locate Julia's elusive nephew, despite the scant leads that hint at his death...or possible survival. Unbeknownst to them, the nephew in question is Arthur Adamson, a jeweler with a penchant for crime. Alongside his secret accomplice and lover Fran, Arthur has been amassing a fortune of his own through a series of audacious jewel thefts, often involving the kidnapping of the gem owners. Born Edward Shoebridge, he was adopted by friends of the Rainbird's chauffeur and later faked his own death in a house fire that claimed his adoptive parents. He emerged from the ashes of his past life as Arthur Adamson. When Arthur discovers George and Blanche's mission to find Edward Shoebridge, fear grips him. Believing their search is linked to his latest kidnapping, Arthur and Fran resolve to do whatever it takes, including murder, to prevent George and Blanche from unearthing the truth about "Eddie". As Blanche and George inch closer to the truth, their reckless pursuit puts them in the crosshairs of the dangerous kidnappers. The Family Plot thus unravels into a suspenseful game of cat and mouse, where secrets from the past threaten to shatter the present.
