Plot

In the sweltering summer of 1913, we find ourselves entwined in the life of Jacob (Ole Soltoft), a 17-year-old Danish lad teetering on the tightrope between adolescence and adulthood. His mind is a tempest of worries, primarily his excessive preoccupation with masturbation and his inability to decipher the seductive advances of the housemaid Sophie (Lise Rosendahl). An escape from his maze of confusion presents itself when he’s invited to his affluent uncle’s (Ole Monty) summer house in a breathtaking coastal town. In this summer haven, Jacob encounters a kaleidoscope of characters: his uncle, his aunt (Bodil Steen), the bohemian housemaid Hansigne (Susanne Heinrich), the innocent housekeeper Rosegod (Lily Broberg), his enchanting cousin Vibeke (Ghita Nørby), and his uncle's tempting employee (Ingolf David). His journey into manhood takes a significant leap when he stumbles into his first sexual encounter with his cousin Vibeke—a clumsy yet pivotal episode. In Vibeke’s absence, Jacob finds comfort and guidance in the arms of the free-spirited Hansigne, who becomes his tutor in the art of eroticism. This clandestine relationship takes a violent turn when Hansigne's lover, Knud (Hugo Herrestrup), discovers their secret and attacks Jacob. However, this confrontation serves as a catalyst for Jacob’s metamorphosis into manhood. With a newfound sense of self and masculinity, Jacob returns home, ready to navigate the uncharted waters of passion with Sophie. As summer fades, Jacob’s journey from boyhood to manhood is complete, leaving him forever changed by the events of the unforgettable summer of 1913.
