Entre Nous (1983)

In 1942, amidst a war-torn France, we meet Lena, a Belgian Jew seeking refuge from the scourge of deportation to Germany. Her only salvation lies in a marriage of convenience to Michel, a man of the Foreign Legion, now turned garage owner, who unknowingly nurtures a growing affection for her. Over time, Lena develops a fondness for Michel, a man who proved a safe harbor during the tempest of war, despite his divergence from the man she initially perceived. Parallelly, we encounter Madeleine, an artist of affluence, whose love story was tragically truncated by a stray bullet during a clash between Nazis and resistance fighters. Left a widow, she finds solace in the arms of the "fun" actor Costa, whose constant pursuit of quick riches often leads him down a path of failure or calamity. Their union births a son, René, adding to the spectrum of post-war families trying to recapture normalcy. The year 1952 in Lyons sees these two families converge at a school event, attended by Lena and Michel's daughters, Florence and Sophie, and Madeleine and Costa's son, René. Despite the initial stiffness, the crux of the quartet's bond lies in the friendship that blossoms between Lena and Madeleine. Their relationship, a lifeline in a sea of marital discontentment, provides the emotional sustenance that their respective marriages lack. However, this intense camaraderie is perceived as a threat by Michel, causing him to question its appropriateness and Lena's commitment to her marital duties. "Entre Nous" beautifully paints a canvas of love, friendship, and the complexities of human relationships, taking us on a journey through the shared lives of these four individuals, struggling to navigate the aftermath of war and the challenges of their personal lives.
