Plot

In the quaint English city of Oxford, 1965, the story unfolds around Endeavour Morse, an unconventional young constable with a deep affection for classical music and a firm stance against alcohol. He stands on the precipice of leaving the police force due to a personal heartbreak, but fate intertwines him with Inspector Thursday's perplexing investigation into the disappearance of a local schoolgirl, Mary Tremlett. Morse, using his intellectual prowess, deciphers a cryptic code derived from crosswords in the local newspaper and poetry books found at Mary's bedside. This leads him to deduce that Mary was secretly meeting a lover, a revelation which guides him and Thursday to the grim discovery of her murder site. Tragedy compounds with the suicide of Mary's boyfriend, Miles Percival, and Morse's subsequent meeting with Miles' tutor, Dr. Stromming—the enigmatic crossword setter with a seemingly solid alibi. As Morse delves deeper into the complex case, he collides with DS Arthur Lott, a jealous and dismissive officer who feels threatened by Morse's sharpness. Lott seeks to pin the crime on Miles, but the narrative takes a sinister turn when it's revealed that Mary and other girls were lured into attending lavish orgies hosted by the morally repugnant car dealer, Teddy Samuels—a man with both Lott and other influential figures in his pocket. Inspector Thursday, an invaluable mentor to Morse, and Morse himself face professional reprimands as a result of the unfolding scandal. Morse contemplates leaving Oxford but finds hope in the enigmatic code written on Mary's hand. As he unravels this code, he uncovers the truth, securing his place in the force and his future in the city. Simultaneously, Morse forms a connection with the captivating Rosalind Stromming, a celebrated opera singer whose music has profoundly influenced his life. This 1965 tale of Endeavour Morse is a labyrinthine journey through crime, deception, and personal growth, where the lines between innocence and guilt blur, and the truth waits to be discovered in the most unexpected places.
