In the sun-drenched land of Dona Paula, near Panaji, Goa, India, resides the Hindi-speaking collegian, Sapna, nestled in a life of affluence with her professor father, Kundanlal, and her mother. Next door, the Tamil-speaking vegetarian family of V. Sivaramakrishan, his wife Vandana, and son Vasudevan, live a contrasting lifestyle, vehemently disapproving of the Kundanlals' carnivorous habits. The veil of tranquility shatters when the two families discover the blossoming love between Sapna and Vasudevan, sparking shock and fury.
Their romance, however, thrives against adversity, forcing the families to impose a year-long separation between the young lovers, prohibiting any form of communication. Vasudevan succumbs to the decree, departing for Hyderabad to work under G. Haribabu, a reputable Chartered Accountant. In Hyderabad, he befriends a widow, Sandhya, learning to dance and mastering Hindi under her guidance, even as his father orchestrates a matrimonial alliance with Tamil-speaking Tulsi.
