Plot

In the throes of corporate desperation, San Francisco's Northwest Broadcasting Corporation uncovers a desperate bid for survival, launching True TV. This innovative network vows to air the unfiltered life of an ordinary individual, 24/7, with the protagonist enlisted for an initial one-month contract. The audacious project is steered by Cynthia, a visionary producer, poised to either bask in glory or sink in failure, under the watchful eyes of her boss, Whitaker, the NWBC president. Cynthia's quest for a captivating subject concludes with Ed Pekurny, a charming yet aimless Texan, rechristening the network as EdTV. Ed, a laid-back video store clerk with no ambitions past his dead-end job, becomes the unsuspecting star. His life, filled with bar hangouts and quirky family dynamics, is broadcasted, making for compelling viewing. Despite some initial reluctance, Ed agrees to participate, coaxed by his boisterous brother, Ray, who yearns for a taste of fame, and the support of his family. EdTV, after a sluggish start, emerges as a sensation, with Ed's seemingly mundane life capturing the public's attention. However, living under constant surveillance soon unveils its pitfalls, particularly when a figure from Ed's past reemerges, and Ray's relationship with his attractive UPS delivery girlfriend, Shari, whom Ed secretly admires, starts to unravel. The network's success brings its own set of challenges, as Ed and his entourage find themselves using the omnipresent cameras as an excuse for their actions. Meanwhile, Whitaker begins to exploit Ed's newfound fame to make EdTV more tantalizing, disregarding Cynthia's objections, leading to a whirlwind of chaos. EdTV is a humorous yet sharp exploration of an average Joe's life, spiraling out of control when intertwined with the merciless realm of reality television.
