In the quaint, close-knit town of Verplanck, New York, an unexpected tragedy eclipses the everyday humdrum. Mona Dearly, a notoriously belligerent and universally detested woman, meets her demise under suspicious circumstances. Her ill-fated Yugo, borrowed from her long-suffering and intellectually challenged son, Jeff, mysteriously plummets off a cliff and into the tranquil river below, resulting in her untimely drowning. The town's astute Police Chief, Wyatt Rash, is drawn into a twisted game of whodunit as he uncovers that the car's brake lines were deliberately severed. The pool of suspects is disturbingly vast, beginning with the marginalized Jeff, whom Mona incessantly belittled.
