Plot

Under the blistering sun of Arizona, a tale of the Old West unfurls in 'Drift Fence.' Reluctant tenderfoot Jim Traft (Benny Baker), new to the roughness of the West, finds himself inheriting his uncle's ranch, a prospect he dreads. In comes the seasoned rodeo champion Jim Travis (Tom Keene), a stranger to whom Traft confesses his apprehensions. In a twist of fate, the ranch's foreman, "Windy" Watkins (Irving Bacon), who is yet to lay eyes on the young Traft, proposes a plan. With Travis posing as Traft, they will build a drift fence to shield the ranch from marauding rustlers, a job that Travis, secretly a Texas Ranger on the trail of a notorious fugitive, willingly undertakes. Unbeknownst to them, the very fugitive they seek, Clay Jackson (Stanley Andrews), lurks in the shadows, manipulating his band of rustlers in a saloon nearby. He warns them against revealing their scheme to "Slinger" Dunn (Buster Crabbe), the owner of a ranch adjoining the Traft's, who is unknowingly being used as a pawn in their game. The plot thickens as Dunn, his sister Molly (Katherine DeMille), and their steadfast grandmother (Effie Ellsler) fiercely oppose the building of the drift fence, fearing it will shatter the tradition of the open range they hold dear. 'Drift Fence' traces the rugged journey of these characters, as they grapple with rustlers, tradition, and the wild, untamed West. The question remains: Will the drift fence stand, or will it crumble under the weight of the Old West's hallowed traditions and ruthless outlaws? The sun-soaked horizon holds the answer.
