Plot

Amidst the unforgiving concrete wilderness of Chicago, Loretta, a deeply frustrated and struggling woman played by Academy Award nominee Alfre Woodard, spirals into a self-destructive vortex, often leaving her two children in the compassionate care of her mother, Rosa Lynn. Desperate for her daughter to escape this grim life and to rediscover her roots, Rosa Lynn hatches a plan of salvation, sending Loretta and her children away from the stifling city to the vibrant heart of the Mississippi Delta. In this rich tapestry of southern heritage, Loretta and her children find themselves under the roof of Rosa's successful brother, Uncle Earl, portrayed by Al Freeman Jr. Here, Loretta is put to work in Earl's quaint restaurant, Just Chicken, serving not just meals, but dishing out slices of life from the deep South. Earl becomes their guide through an ancestral odyssey, narrating the legendary tales of their family, the Sinclairs, from their time of enslavement before the Civil War to their current existence. The film, Down in the Delta, is a poignant family portrait painted with Maya Angelou's poetic touch in her only but unforgettable directorial venture. It boasts a stellar ensemble including Loretta Devine, Esther Rolle in her final film appearance, and Wesley Snipes, who also takes on the role of producer. This movie is an unsung gem from the 1990s independent filmmaking scene, as it weaves a captivating narrative of rediscovery, resilience, and the power of familial bonds. Each scene is a testament to the resilience of a family’s spirit, charged by a deeply inspiring ancestral story that has survived against all odds.
