Plot

Set against the backdrop of feudal Osaka, Double Suicide (1969) weaves a tale of forbidden love and tragic devotion, suffused with the unyielding protocols of the 18th century Japanese society. Jihei, a paper merchant portrayed by Kichiemon Nakamura, finds himself ensnared in a consuming passion for the alluring courtesan, Koharu, brought to life by Shima Iwashita. Their connection goes beyond the confines of their professional relationship, with Jihei being one of her regular clienteles. Jihei's obsession with Koharu eclipses his duties, leaving his paper store in the hands of his wife, Osan. Each month, for twenty-nine months, he pens a pledge to liberate Koharu from her life of servitude so they might be united. However, his lavish spending on her services leaves him unable to afford her ransom. Meanwhile, Koharu is left vulnerable to anyone who can pay her price, despite her heart belonging to Jihei. In their desperation, the lovers contemplate a double suicide, longing for an eternal togetherness denied to them on Earth. Their tragic resolution, however, is threatened by external pressures. Jihei's brother, Magoemon, and Osan's parents urge him to fulfill his responsibilities as a husband and father. His nemesis, the wealthy Tahei, arrogantly believes his riches can win Koharu's affection, a prospect she loathes. Osan, on the other hand, harbors secrets and manipulations of her own, knowing more about her husband's actions than she lets on. In this heart-rending narrative, the double suicide hangs as a grim specter, influenced by the lovers' fears of the repercussions their actions might have on the living. Double Suicide (1969) is a poignant exploration of love, societal constraints, and the lengths to which one might go for the sake of their heart's desire.
