Dor (2006)

In the vibrant hues of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, Shankar Singh and his wife Meera bask in the warmth of their close-knit family, which includes Shankar's widowed grandmother, Laxmibai, and his parents, Gowri and Randhir. Meera's arrival into the family is seen as a fortuitous blessing, a charm that soon undergoes a test when Shankar travels to Saudi Arabia for work, promising to stay in touch. He fulfills his promise, sending a generous portion of his earnings back home, which helps to dissolve the family's debts. However, when his letters stop arriving, a cloud of worry descends upon Meera. Her worst fears come true when she learns that Shankar has died tragically, having been thrown off a 10th-floor balcony. Meera's world turns gray as she is stripped of her vibrant clothing, jewelry, and her freedom. She is confined to the house, clad in dark clothes and consigned to a life of prayer. Yet, a ray of hope pierces her gloomy existence in the form of Zeenat, an independent Muslim woman from the distant hills of Himachal Pradesh. Zeenat is on a desperate mission to find her husband, Amir Khan, who is accused of a crime that links both women in a way that neither could have imagined. Just as Meera begins to see a friend in Zeenat, a shocking revelation threatens to shatter her newfound solace. She discovers that her father-in-law plans to sell her to a wealthy building contractor, Chopra, and that Zeenat's husband is the man accused of killing Shankar. Zeenat, it appears, has come to persuade Meera to sign a Mafi-Naama, a pardon that could save Amir from a Saudi jail, and certain death. Betrayed and broken, Meera refuses to sign the document and finds herself locked away by Randhir. As the sands of time threaten to bury their hopes, Zeenat stands on the brink of losing her husband, and Meera teeters on the edge of a life she never imagined. Their fates rest on the tough choices they make, and the strength they find in each other amidst the turmoil.
