In the bustling city of Calcutta, Amit Roy (Amitabh Bachchan), a humble man, is entranced by the grace and beauty of a dance artiste, Rekha (Rekha). Overwhelmed by her charm, he seeks her hand in marriage and together, they embark on the journey of life. Despite their contrasting personalities, they remain steadfast, giving birth to a son, Sumit. However, their tranquil life is disrupted with the arrival of U.S. returned Ranjit Malik (Prem Chopra). Offering Rekha the chance to continue her dancing and venture into the world of cinema, Ranjit plants seeds of ambition in Rekha’s heart. An unfortunate train journey to Bombay, intended to kickstart Rekha's career, culminates in tragedy when a drunken Amit mysteriously falls from the train, presumed dead. Free from the shackles of her past life, Rekha places young Sumit in a distant boarding school and plunges headfirst into her career in cinema with the ever-present Ranjit by her side. Renaming herself Sunita Devi, she ascends through the ranks to become the reigning queen of Bengali cinema. However, six years later, a mysterious man, Naresh Dutt, is found wounded on the railway tracks, with no recollection of his past. He finds himself living a comfortable life with a wealthy couple. A chance encounter with a film featuring Sunita Devi sparks fragments of lost memories. He pieces together his past, recognizing Sunita as his wife, Rekha, and realizing that his best friend, Ranjit, was the one who attempted to kill him. Now aware of his true identity as Amit Roy, he concocts a plan of revenge against Ranjit, while also seeking to regain custody of his son. Posing as a film producer, he approaches Sunita and Ranjit with a film idea eerily mirroring Rekha's past life, named ‘Do Anjaane’. As the plot unfolds, Rekha and Ranjit grow suspicious of Naresh's uncanny resemblance to Rekha’s supposedly deceased husband, Amit.
