Plot

Unfolding amidst the electrifying pulse of contemporary Berlin, "Desire Will Set You Free" presents a candid, often sardonic portrayal of life in this vibrant city. At the heart of the tale is the intricate bond between an American writer of Israeli/Palestinian descent and a Russian hustler who dreams of becoming an artist. Through their eyes, we probe the city's vivacious queer and underground scenes, their lives intertwining with the city's rich tapestry and its diaspora of expatriates and refugees. Their journey through Berlin is a veritable odyssey through time and culture as they encounter echoes of the Weimar Republic, remnants of World War II, the shimmering Bowie years, and the raw energy of punk. As they navigate through pulsating clubs and intimate parties, they are drawn deeper into the city's allure and their own innermost desires. A cavalcade of original Berlin personalities, from the queen of punk, Nina Hagen, to the electro sensation Peaches and the Brooklyn-based Blood Orange, breathe life into the city's atmosphere. German icons Rummelsnuff and rapper Sookee join the ensemble, alongside legendary artist Blixa Bargeld of Einstürzende Neubauten. The film also features performances by Amber Benson, known for her role in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer", Rosa Von Praunheim, a legend of the German film industry, and artists Eva & Adele, among others. The narrative is further enriched by the real Berlin locations and the performances by Tim-Fabian Hoffman (Sasha), Chloé Griffin (Cathrine), and the director, Yony Leyser (Ezra). "Desire Will Set You Free" is an exploration of identity, desire, and the pulsating heartbeat of Berlin, a city that embodies the very essence of freedom and self-expression.
