Deceived (2002)

Perched atop the lofty Sierra Nevada Mountains, a remote space observatory buzzes with anticipation as a strip chart recorder diligently etches out confirming lines of an extraterrestrial signal. Billionaire Emmett Shaw, the enigmatic owner of the observatory, races to the discovery site, eager to unveil the biggest revelation in human history that he orchestrated. In his quest to share this monumental discovery with the world, Shaw is accompanied by two preeminent journalists: Kara Walsh, a strikingly beautiful investigative reporter indebted to Shaw for her career, and Reverend Fletcher, a spiritual visionary with a popular radio show. Jack Jones, a brilliant yet irascible computer technician with a knack for riling up Smitty, his former lover and the program's devout Christian director, also joins the expedition. Unbeknownst to Shaw, the military, under the command of the decorated Colonel Garrett, has already intercepted the intelligent signal through a clandestine operation. Realizing the signal's capacity to amplify human ESP, Garrett heads to the observatory with Lieutenant Vasquez, his leading ESP operative, and a team of soldiers. Both parties, Shaw's and Garrett's, converge upon the observatory on the brink of a violent storm, only to find it in ruins and its resident technicians mysteriously absent. Isolated from the rest of the world, the group persists in tracking the signal. With each new broadcast, it becomes evident that the signal's source bears a malevolent nature that brings out the darkest traits in its listeners. Soon, a torrent of envy, lust, greed, and anger ruptures into a grim world of murder and deceit. The quest to control the signal's power threatens to obliterate them. There's one way out, but the real question is whether they will believe it enough to see it. Will the struggle for power lead to their ultimate destruction, or will they navigate through this perilous journey to the truth?
