In the unsettling thriller, Dark Harbor, David Weinberg, a middle-aged lawyer, and his significantly younger wife, Alexis Chandler Weinberg, find their lives irrevocably altered one stormy night. After seven years of marriage, the couple embarks on a journey through a desolate road, racing against time and the weather to catch the last ferry to their secluded island retreat. But fate has other plans.
Their path is suddenly crossed by a crumpled form on the roadside, a young drifter, battered and bruised. Despite the storm's fury and the urgency to catch the ferry, Alexis insists on aiding this stranger, weaving the first thread of a complicated web of events. They offer help, rejecting the notion of involving the police, and find themselves spending the night in a motel, their ferry long gone.
The following day, they reach their island residence, the drifter in tow. An ill-fated sailing excursion in the mist leads them to another island, where they find the enigmatic drifter camping, further entangling their lives with his. When a golf outing leaves David away, Alexis finds herself drawn to the drifter's mysterious allure, his poetry, and his eccentric requests.
A peculiar poem about drowning, a lesson in the lethal and aphrodisiac properties of local mushrooms, and an initially rejected romantic advance weave a tale of twisted attraction and clandestine intentions. The tension escalates when their boat malfunctions, trapping them on the island, and a fierce argument erupts between David and Alexis, followed by a physical confrontation with the drifter.
In the midst of chaos, Alexis finds herself drawn back to the drifter, seduced by his enigmatic charm and the allure of the aphrodisiac mushroom.
