When the rustic tranquility of her family's Georgia farm is disrupted by the arrival of Dakota, a combat dog delivered by Sergeant CJ Malcolm, widowed single mother Kate Sanders (Abbie Cornish) finds herself grappling with more than just the challenges of farm life and her duties at the local volunteer fire department. Dakota's arrival is the fulfillment of a solemn promise made by Sergeant Malcolm to his fallen Afghanistan comrade, Clay Sanders—Kate's late husband and the father of her young daughter, Alex (Lola Sultan). As Dakota watches over the family, his canine courage and loyalty quickly make him a beloved figure in the small town and an integral part of their lives. But beneath the bucolic charm of their farm life, an old secret, long buried, surfaces. The local Sheriff (Patrick Muldoon) knows that the Sanders' farm holds more than sentimental value—it's a treasure trove, and he's willing to go to any lengths to acquire it. In the face of the Sheriff's relentless pressure to sell, Kate, her daughter Alex, and their new four-legged companion, Dakota, are drawn closer together. As Alex learns the irreplaceable value of a dog's friendship, Kate begins to grasp the true worth of their farm.
