Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979)

This movie adaptation of the classic series sees Admiral Jim Kirk taking command of his old ship, the Enterprise. Kirk and his old crew must work alongside Captain Willard Decker, the new Captain of the Enterprise, in fighting off a bizarre alien energy force that destroys Klingon and Federation ships alike. Kirk and his crew quickly surmise that the alien entity poses a threat to every living thing in the galaxy as it attacks members of the crew in increasingly violent and disturbing ways. The film explores many themes, including scientific discovery, the interpersonal dynamics of the crew, and Kirk's reluctance to receive a promotion that took him away from commanding the Enterprise.
