Elly Jordan, a melodic Brooklynite with a disconcerting fear of animals, finds himself and his bandmates penniless at Hardy's Dude Ranch in rustic Two Bits, Wyoming. The Hardy family – Ma, Pop, their daughter Jane, and son Jeff – offer the ragtag musicians refuge and a chance to earn their keep by playing for the ranch's guests. This humble arrangement takes an unexpected turn when Elly's captivating voice catches the ear of holidaying theatrical agent, Ray Chadwick, who mistakes the city boy for a bona fide cowboy crooner. Seizing the opportunity, Chadwick signs Elly on the spot, unwittingly launching a web of deception and glamour.
As Elly begins to navigate the uncharted waters of stardom, Jane, smitten by the charming Brooklyn cowboy, helps him perfect his cowboy persona. Elly, despite his fear of animals, manages to pull off the ruse, earning the stage name Wyoming Steve Gibson and carving out a successful screen test. However, when Hollywood executives arrive in New York with Elly's contract, Chadwick, now privy to Elly's true identity, fears the impending exposure of their charade.
Meanwhile, as the ranch folk journey east, Jane confesses her love for Elly to Sam Thorne - a ranch cowhand, amateur singer, and her self-proclaimed boyfriend. Sam's response is a vengeful revelation of Elly's true identity after a less-than-successful performance on Captain Rose's Amateur Hour. In a desperate bid to salvage Elly's reputation, Chadwick and his assistant, Pat Dunn, propose a bold plan—Elly should compete in a rodeo.
Under the influence of Professor Landis's hypnosis, the animal-phobic Elly astonishingly becomes a rodeo champion, setting a new record at Madison Square Garden. When a sneeze snaps him out of the trance, the movie executives are already sold on his cowboy authenticity. Elly signs the contract and seals the deal with a kiss from Jane, proving that sometimes, the wildest of dreams can come true in the most unexpected ways.
