Plot

In the vibrant heart of Brooklyn, Rusty Parker, a radiant redhead and nimble-footed dancer, graces the stage of Danny McGuire's Night Club. Her heart is set on the dazzling lights of Broadway, and to climb the ladder of success, she enters a contest to become a 'Cover Girl.' Her striking beauty and mesmerizing performances strike a chord with publisher John Coudair, who is haunted by the memory of his lost love, the showgirl Maribelle Hicks, Rusty's grandmother. Despite his mother's disapproval, John had once been engaged to Maribelle, who left him at the altar for the piano-player she truly loved. Rusty's destiny takes a turn when she lands on the cover of John's magazine, dressed as a bride, mirroring the love story snuffed out years ago. She is soon pursued by Noel Wheaton, a wealthy theatrical producer and John's close friend. He whisks her away to star in a lavish Broadway musical, set amidst the glamour and glitz of the mid-1940s cover girls. Her ethereal dancing enchants the audience as she descends a grand spiral into the arms of suave men. However, her newfound success casts a shadow over her relationship with Danny McGuire, her boyfriend, and club owner. Tormented by the prospect of losing Rusty, Danny dances a poignant 'Alter Ego' sequence, expressing his deepest fears. Danny and his sidekick, Genius, leave the glimmering city behind, setting out to entertain the soldiers fighting in World War II. Dazzled by the allure of fame, power, and security, Rusty agrees to marry Noel. Yet, as she immerses herself in this sophisticated lifestyle, she starts spiraling into unhappiness, seeking solace in alcohol and shedding weight. She yearns for the simple joys of her past life – the love of Danny, the camaraderie with her old friends, and their Friday night ritual of hunting for pearls in oysters. When Rusty receives a symbolic pearl of great power, she realizes that her heart truly belongs to Danny. Torn between her dreams and the love she left behind, she must choose whether to continue her life in the limelight or to reunite with the man she loves. The tale of Cover Girl is a riveting journey through the glamour, heartbreak, and choices in the world of showbiz.
