Cool Air (2006)

Housing-searching screenwriter Charlie Baxter finds himself drawn to a decaying mansion nestled in the secluded mountains above Malibu. Despite his creative stagnation and unfulfilling job rewriting hackneyed sci-fi and horror scripts, Baxter sees potential in this eerie dwelling. As he settles into his new lodgings, he uncovers the enigma of his upstairs neighbor - a doctor with a taste for unconventional experiments. Baxter becomes increasingly entwined with the mansion's inhabitants—a mysterious landlady, her withdrawn autistic daughter, and an eccentric lodger who all possess tales that breathe life into Baxter's stalled "great American Screenplay". As he dives deeper into their world, his health deteriorates, culminating in a heart attack. Awakening from the brink of death, he finds himself under the care of the elusive doctor, a woman named Shockner, who appears to be locked in a time capsule. Shockner persuades Baxter to stay until he is fully recovered, gradually revealing her own chilling tale. Two decades earlier, she succumbed to a fatal disease, and her desperate solution—a dark dance with the occult—granted her life, but at an unimaginable cost. Baxter finds himself spiralling into a nightmarish reality, a world teetering on the edge of sanity, where science and murder intersect in Shockner's gruesome experiments. The terror lurking in the room at the top of the stairs begins to seep into Baxter's reality, leading him to realize that he must confront the malevolent force that has ensnared him.
