In the heart of the city, where crime lurks in every shadow, Margaret Holt has spent the past four years aiding her brother, Victor Holt, the stalwart assistant District Attorney in their relentless pursuit of the notorious Schemer Marko gang, a cabal renowned for their illicit dope dealings. When Margaret finds herself fatally crossing paths with Marko, also known as 'James Morton', it's in response to the imminent threat he poses after discovering her covert collection of evidence against him. Barely escaping the fallout, Margaret seeks refuge in a humble abode dedicated to providing sanctuary for society's less fortunate women. However, her clandestine presence and the dangerous secret she harbors are soon unearthed by John Howell, a prying gossip columnist, and Winthrop Clavering, an eccentric, old mystery novelist. Together, they devise a scheme as daring as it is desperate, seeking to vindicate Margaret whilst simultaneously ensnaring the Marko gang. The stakes rise inexorably as the Marko gang, in a chilling turn of events, abducts Victor and embarks on a relentless hunt for Margaret. A suspenseful game of cat and mouse ensues, spiraling into a thrilling climax that promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
