Plot

After a rigorous tour in Afghanistan, Captain Nick Hawkes of the United States Marine Corp, a role he had dreamed of since childhood, returns to Washington DC. He finds himself amidst a storm of controversy, facing a military trial with fourteen counts of murder and a charge of conduct unbecoming. The prosecution paints a picture of a vengeful captain, accusing him of retaliation following the loss of four of his men in combat. The case stands on shaky grounds with the only witnesses being his remaining soldiers, still on active duty and themselves implicated in similar charges, creating a tense standoff between Hawkes and his superior, Colonel Dodd. The prosecution, led by Captain Cannon and Lt. Passka, is determined to corner Hawkes into a plea deal—an admission of guilt for a reduced sentence, prison time, and a subsequent discharge. However, the plea deal takes a drastic turn when civilian Afghan witnesses claim the victims were innocents. As Hawkes awaits trial, he's reassigned to local duties with the Casualty Notification Team. The course of the trial takes an unexpected turn when Hawkes crosses paths with Molly Cunningham, a war widow whose late husband served under the same contentious Colonel Dodd. Molly's involvement in the trial proves to be pivotal, but it is Colonel Dodd's return from Afghanistan to testify that truly alters the atmosphere of the proceedings. The courtroom becomes a battlefield, setting the stage for a face-off between two military men with a history of animosity.
