Plot

As the late 1960s ushered in a wave of radical thinking, a band of free spirits gathered funds, notably from the glitz and glamor of Hollywood, to acquire an 80-acre sanctuary nestled at the terminus of a dusty trail in Siskiyou County, California. This haven was christened Big Bear Ranch, a commune thriving under the banner of "free land for free people." The film Commune (2005) weaves a rich tapestry of the commune's past, utilizing a treasure trove of archival footage, photographs, documents, news clippings, and riveting interviews with former and current inhabitants. The narrative traces the commune's journey, beginning with the harsh inaugural winter, evolving gender roles in work, the birth of environmental politics, and the blossoming of free love and family units. The narrative delves into the complexities of communal living, from collective decision-making to the unique experiences of child-rearing and reminiscences of a childhood soaked in radical freedom. However, the utopia is tested during a late 70's crisis when a cult-like group infiltrates the commune. The film concludes with candid reflections from the now aged original inhabitants, evaluating the profound impact Big Bear had on their lives. Commune (2005) serves as a compelling exploration of an alternative lifestyle against the backdrop of changing societal norms, providing a unique glimpse into a world far removed from conventional living.
