Alejandro Jodorowsky, the director of the cult films El Topo, The Holy Mountain, and Santa Sangre, once planned to make the first screen adaptation of author Frank Herbert's Dune. Jodorowsky dived deeply into the preproduction phase, and the planned film showed great promise. Unfortunately, the project never reached the production stage for various reasons, including a potentially cost-prohibitive budget.
