Plot

In the quaint confines of a small town, Eve Appleton, married to local garage proprietor Bill Appleton, fosters dreams of theatrical grandeur. A fateful encounter with a visiting actor leads to a fatal altercation, and Bill is sentenced to prison. Wracked with guilt for her unwitting role in her husband's downfall, Eve, cradling her infant daughter, ventures into the world of theatre to seek redemption. As time passes, Eve entrusts her daughter to the care of her friend, "Tim" Adams, and in the labyrinth of life and theatre, she crosses paths with the kindly Bert Ballin. A romance blossoms, yet driven by guilt and fear, Eve escapes to foreign shores, her star on the rise. As America's newest Broadway sensation, Eve is hailed as the Toast of Broadway. But the past isn't easily forgotten. Joe Grant, a lawyer from her hometown, rekindles her dormant vows of atonement. Amid the glamour and applause, Eve is left grappling with a tumultuous question: what must a girl do when her past haunts her present?
