Plot

In the heart of Bucharest, 1959, the echo of a daring bank heist reverberates through a nation under the oppressive grip of post-war Communist rule. The audacious act, a direct affront to the iron-fisted regime, sends shockwaves through the country, leaving the authorities gasping in disbelief. The perpetrators? Five unlikely criminals - four men and one woman, all heroes of the WWII Jewish Resistance and esteemed members of Romanian society. Their legacy as renowned war heroes intertwines with their audacious crime, adding an intricate layer of complexity to their already captivating story. In a twist of tragic irony, these heroes-turned-outlaws find themselves facing the consequence of their act head-on. Arrested, tried, and convicted, they await their inevitable execution. However, the regime, never one to waste an opportunity for propaganda, forces the convicts to star in a cinematic portrayal of their own crime. Meanwhile, a Romanian police officer, an old friend from their Resistance days, hatches an ambitious plan. He seeks to orchestrate a heist under the guise of this film, a daring move that blurs the line between reality and fiction. As the camera rolls, the stakes rise. Will they manage to pull off an audacious double bluff, or will they fall victim to the very narrative they are forced to enact? "Closer to the Moon" is a mesmerizing blend of history and fiction, a tale of defiance and survival that dances on the razor's edge of hope and despair. As the plot thickens, one thing is clear: these heroes knew the risks, knew the inevitable outcome. Yet, they chose to make a stand, as if echoing a defiant whisper, "Closer to the moon, closer to freedom."
