Plot

In the haunting aftermath of the atomic bombing, six years on from the cataclysmic event of August 6, 1945, school teacher Takako Ishikawa undertakes a poignant journey back to the heart of Hiroshima. She embarks on this voyage not only to honor the memory of her parents, tragically lost in the bombing, but also to reconnect with old friends deeply scarred by the fallout. Orphaned by the disaster, Takako was raised by her uncle and aunt. Her return to her hometown brings her to the doorstep of her friend, Natsue Morikawa, a woman rendered infertile by the insidious side effects of the A-bomb. As Takako navigates the skeletal remains of her once vibrant city, she encounters Iwakichi, a nearly blind beggar who was once a comrade of her father's. Venturing into the squalid slums where Iwakichi resides, Takako discovers his grandson, Taro, living in an orphanage, as the beggar's shanty offers no suitable environment for a child. Amidst the ruins, she learns that three of her former kindergarten pupils miraculously survived the bombing. Takako seeks them out, uncovering the chilling impact the A-bomb and its deadly radiation have had on their lives. As her visit draws to a close, Takako is faced with a heartrending decision. She offers to take Taro with her, hoping to provide a better life for the child, but is confronted with the unbreakable bond between the boy and his grandfather. The scorched landscape of Hiroshima serves as a stark backdrop to this deeply moving tale of survival, resilience, and the enduring power of human connection.
