In the autumn of her years, Ella Bishop, a devoted spinster and septuagenarian, finds herself perched on the precipice of retirement. After a fulfilling fifty-two year tenure as a freshman English teacher at the small-town Midwestern University, her alma mater, Ella can't help but reminisce about the journey that led her here. Embracing her imminent future, she nevertheless finds herself immersed in the labyrinth of her past. Thrust into the teaching profession by an unexpected offer from her mentor and then university president, James Corcoran, Ella had always envisioned her path to be a fleeting phase, a stepping stone towards family life. Yet, as her younger cousin Amy Saunders pursued a life of romance, Ella found herself ensnared in a life she hadn't anticipated, one where classroom walls became her home, and her students, her family.
