Plot

In the world of the wealthy and privileged, seventeen-year-old Charlie Bartlett reigns supreme. With an insatiable desire for fame and adoration, he employs his intellect in an array of ingenious yet harmless schemes, leading to his expulsion from multiple private schools. This smart, well-dressed, and authentic young man, despite his cheerful demeanor, is plagued by the absence of his father and the aloofness of his medication-dependent mother, Marilyn. When her resources can no longer shield Charlie from the consequences of his actions, he finds himself thrust into the unfamiliar territory of Western Summit High, a public school. Sporting a blazer and brandishing an attaché case, Charlie sticks out like a sore thumb, becoming the target of the school's head bully, Murphy Bivens. However, his intelligence and resourcefulness soon turn the tables. By first making peace with Murphy and then empathizing with Kip Crombwell, a chronically depressed student, Charlie manages to transform himself into the school's unofficial therapist, dispensing advice and prescription drugs with equal aplomb. He rapidly becomes the go-to guy, the toast of the student body, while navigating the treacherous waters of public school life. As Charlie's popularity soars, he catches the attention of Susan Gardner, a girl who sees beyond his facade to the clever and complex individual he truly is. Unfortunately, Susan is the daughter of the school's despised principal, Nathan Gardner, a man wrestling with his own demons while trying to maintain control over an increasingly rebellious student body. As the school introduces new security measures and faces a student overdose, Charlie's world begins to crumble. Complications arise when his relationship with Susan brings him into direct conflict with her father, and his open-world view lands him in serious trouble. Can this self-made therapist find a way to heal himself, mend his strained relationships, and simply be a teenager? As Charlie and Mr. Gardner grapple with their respective issues, their actions will decide the fate of Western Summit High, forcing both to confront their own understanding of who they are and what they truly want. In this complex world of adolescence, Charlie Bartlett's journey is a captivating exploration of identity, popularity, and the power of self-awareness.
