Plot

In "Change Nothing," viewers are granted a behind-the-scenes look into the vibrant world of French actress and singer, Jeanne Balibar. The film, helmed by Portuguese director Pedro Costa, who also takes on the role of the cameraman, paints a richly detailed, monochromatic portrait of Balibar as she navigates the many facets of her career. From grueling rehearsals to live performances, and even one-on-one sessions with her singing coach for an opera bouffe by Jacques Offenbach, the film is a testament to Balibar's versatility and dedication to her craft. Costa, a long-time friend of Balibar, captures her artistic journey in long, uninterrupted shots, placing viewers right at the heart of the performance. One of the film's standout moments involves a creative collaboration between Balibar and her guitarist, Rodolphe Burger, as they experiment with various renditions of a song. Shot entirely in digital, "Change Nothing" is an intimate and profound study of the creative process, reflecting the directorial prowess of Costa, a veteran filmmaker since his debut in 1989 with "O sangue," and whose body of work is celebrated in film circles, including numerous screenings in Rotterdam.
