Plot

In "Calling on Costa Rica" (1947), the audience is introduced to the audacious American adventurer, William Walker. Assisted by the Brighams, he seizes the reins of Nicaragua, appointing himself as the dictator. Not satisfied with this conquest, he attempts to replicate his success in Costa Rica. However, his ambition is met with staunch resistance, resulting in his defeat and execution, which subsequently leads to the U.S. paying Costa Rica an indemnity of $26,704. Post this tumultuous period, Costa Rica emerges resilient, pledging to enhance the living conditions of its working-class citizens. The film then transitions into a vivid travelogue, offering a captivating exploration of this small yet vibrant American republic, originally settled by Spanish farmers. The journey commences at the bustling hub of San Jose Airport, a pivotal stopover for travelers traversing the length of the Americas. The country's impressive network of roads, acclaimed as among the finest worldwide, underlines the significance of transportation in facilitating this movement. The narrative then shifts to the capital, San Jose, a quaint city of approximately 70,000 inhabitants, nestled amidst numerous recreational spots in its outskirts. Leaving the city's charm behind, viewers are taken to an enchanting orchid farm, a testament to Costa Rica's botanical richness, boasting more orchid varieties than anywhere else on the globe. The film then ascends to the awe-inspiring volcanic mountains, housing the world's largest crater within their rugged terrain. Descending from these towering heights, the audience is guided towards the lush farmlands. Here, the country's economic backbone, coffee and bananas, are grown in abundance for export, painting a vibrant portrait of a nation rebounding from turmoil and embracing its bountiful natural resources.
