Plot

In the quaint heart of Knapely, Yorkshire County, best friends Chris Harper (Dame Helen Mirren) and Annie Clarke (Dame Julie Walters) find solace and companionship in their local chapter of the Women's Institute (WI). With its motto promising "enlightenment, fun, and friendship", the institute is a beacon of community, although its conformity and mundane activities, championed by the rigid local President Marie (Geraldine James), often seem to miss the mark. The duo finds themselves navigating the humdrum of monthly presentations, and painfully unexciting fundraising calendars featuring local landmarks. The lackluster reception of the previous year's calendar, which barely raised £75.60, leaves them yearning for a change. Tragedy strikes when Annie's husband John (John Alderton), a horticulture enthusiast, succumbs to leukemia. Inspired by his metaphor about plants being most beautiful in the final stages of their life, Chris proposes an unconventional tribute to his memory. She envisions a new sofa for the family room at the hospital that comforted John in his last days, funded by a daringly different calendar. This isn't just any calendar, but one graced with tasteful, artistic photographs of the Knapely WI members in the nude. The idea, born out of the timeless adage that sex sells, presents its own set of challenges. Chris and Annie must not only convince nine other WI members to bare it all for the camera but also find a photographer who shares their vision. As they embark on this audacious venture, they’re uncertain of the reception they'll receive from Marie, the national WI organization, their friends, and family. They risk not just failing to raise the necessary funds, but losing money and potentially disrupting the harmony of their beloved institute. But in the face of adversity, the women of the Rylstone Women's Institute show a resilience that transcends their small Yorkshire village, sparking a global sensation that outshines even Britney Spears and Cindy Crawford, and redefining the meaning of beauty, friendship, and community in the process.
