Plot

In the heart of the mid-70s, amidst the timeless allure of France, we meet Roland and Vanessa, an American couple teetering on the edge of marital despair. Roland, an author grappling with a creative drought, finds solace in the bottom of a whiskey glass, the clinking ice an echo of his once-vibrant prose. Vanessa, a former dancer, is a portrait of melancholy, ensnared by the shadows of mental illness that confine her to their hotel room by the sea. Their relationship, once a mesmerizing dance, is now marred by the discord of frequent arguments. The vibrancy of their love seems to be dissipating, lost in the labyrinth of their individual struggles. However, as they meander through the quaint, seaside town, they find themselves inexplicably drawn towards its effervescent inhabitants. The local barkeeper's glassy gaze and the hotel owner's seasoned tales breathe life into their languishing connection. Their interest is piqued by a pair of radiant newlyweds in the adjacent room. A small hole in the wall becomes their secret window, a voyeuristic portal into a life they once had. Vanessa, particularly, finds herself entranced by the couple's bliss, their laughter a haunting melody echoing her own lost joy. As they navigate this journey, they inch towards confronting their demons and perhaps, rediscovering the rhythm of their lost harmony. "By the Sea" is an intimate exploration of love, loss, and the delicate threads that bind two people together amidst the tumultuous waves of life.
