Plot

As the thirteenth century dawns, the quaint town of Assisi in Italian Umbria is home to Francesco Bernardone, the son of a wealthy merchant. Returning from war, illness-stricken and delirious, Francesco's memories reel back to his days of hedonistic revelries and sensual pleasures. Amidst his feverish hallucinations, the haunting silhouette of a cross signals the end of his former life. His armor, now his "death mask," symbolizes the shedding of his old self. As Francesco slowly regains his health, a profound transformation unfolds within him. The once familiar Francesco, known for his indulgent escapades in local taverns, now chooses the serenity of meadows over the mirth of pubs, replacing his wine goblet with meditative introspections of God's exquisite creations. His life takes a decisive turn when he stumbles upon a dilapidated church. It's here, in the presence of an ancient cross, that Christ decisively alters his path forever. Renouncing his wealth and family, Francesco devotes himself to restoring the Church, adopting the humble title of "il Poverello" – the poorest of the poor. His compelling spiritual journey attracts a throng of followers, and together they construct a powerful new Spiritual Temple. But will the Pope, draped in royal splendor, accept this unconventional order of beggars and the impoverished? Will the allure of shiny gold yield to the worth of inner wealth? Embark on this transformative journey with Brother Sun, Sister Moon to find out.
