Plot

Peter Sanderson (Steve Martin) is a straitlaced divorcee and high-strung attorney, still nursing a heart that yearns for his ex-wife while grappling with the enigma of their parting. As he attempts to navigate the sea of singleness, he finds solace in the virtual companionship of a sharp-witted, tantalizing lawyer known to him only as "Lawyer-Girl". This newfound fascination provides a welcome distraction from the chaos of his life, that includes juggling fatherhood, a bitter divorce, and the pursuit of a billion-dollar client, the formidable Virginia Arness (Dame Joan Plowright). However, when Peter finally comes face-to-face with Lawyer-Girl, she is not the refined Ivy League attorney he had envisioned. Instead, he is confronted by the boisterous and bedazzling Charlene Morton (Queen Latifah), a woman as far removed from his expectations as possible. Charlene is a prison escapee, fervently claiming her innocence of an armed robbery and seeking Peter's legal expertise to clear her name. Peter's life, once a symphony of meticulous order, is thrown into a whirlwind of chaos as he finds himself unwillingly entangled in Charlene's quest for justice. His professional life teeters on the brink of disaster as he strains to maintain a pristine impression on his wealthy client, Virginia Arness. At the same time, his personal life spirals into unpredictability as his best friend Howie Rottman (Eugene Levy) finds himself falling head over heels for the loud and vivacious Charlene. In this wildly entertaining rollercoaster ride, Peter's perfectly planned life is turned upside down, jeopardizing his chances of rekindling his relationship with his ex-wife and securing his billion-dollar client. The story of "Bringing Down the House" is a vibrant blend of chaos, comedy and unexpected camaraderie, where the characters are driven to the brink of madness, only to find unexpected bonds in the most unlikely places.
