Plot

In the politically tumultuous year of 1935, Gwen Harold, a young woman from Johnson City, Tennessee, finds herself drawn into a whirlwind of romance and intrigue. During a visit to her Aunt Peg and her casual companion Fred Tyson, a low-level bureaucrat in Washington DC, she attends the Japanese Embassy's annual reception. There, she crosses paths with Hidenari Terasaki, affectionately known as Terry to his American acquaintances - the Under Secretary to the Japanese Ambassador. As Gwen and Terry's love story unfolds, they navigate the treacherous waters of societal norms and racial prejudices, all the while keeping their relationship a secret from Gwen's family. As the geopolitical tensions heighten, their decision to marry adds another layer of complexity to their lives. Gwen finds herself ill-equipped for the patriarchal Japanese society, and Terry's expectations of her as a traditional Japanese wife. Their love is put to the ultimate test when they are caught in the crosshairs of history on December 7, 1941. With Terry, a Japanese national, forced to leave the U.S., Gwen is faced with the heart-wrenching decision to either follow her husband to Tokyo, continuing to face cultural and societal challenges, or stay in the safety of her homeland. Their young daughter, Mako, further complicates the situation as she becomes a potential victim of prejudice on both sides. As the war rages on, Terry is torn between his professional obligations to support the Japanese war effort and his devotion to his family. Can he protect Gwen and Mako without contributing to the American death toll? Based on a true story, "Bridge to the Sun" is a poignant tale of love, sacrifice, and resilience, set against the backdrop of World War II.
