Plot

In the sullen stillness of open fields, a stern priest and his companion stalk their elusive prey, Camiel Borgman (Jan Bijvoet), a solitary figure dwelling in a stark, underground haven alongside his cohorts, Ludwig and Pascal. Emerging from his subterranean existence, Borgman hitches a ride to suburbia's superficial serenity with a truck driver whose fate is sealed. His journey is punctuated by encounters with Brenda and Ilonka, two enigmatic women with whom he shares a cryptic past. As Borgman, dirt-streaked and mysterious, appears at the modern, polished residence of artist Marina and media mogul Richard, the audience is pulled into a labyrinth of unsettling perceptions and reality distortions, courtesy of Van Warmerdam's compelling screenplay. Borgman oscillates between the roles of prey and predator, stirring the pot of intrigue with a simple request for a bath and a subtle manipulation of Richard's seething jealousy. Following a brutal attack by his callously intolerant host, Marina, weighed down by guilt, offers him sanctuary. As she tends to his wounds and feeds him, she begins to weave a web of deception around her husband. Thus, Borgman gradually insinuates himself into the household, his sinister advances undulating like dark waves crashing against the shore of this seemingly idyllic life. Marina, consumed by narcissism, and Richard, a casual bigot, employ a nanny, Magot, to care for their three children, the youngest of whom, Isolde, is strangely attuned to Borgman's presence. "There is something that surrounds us," Marina whispers in dread, her control seeping away as large dogs wander aimlessly through the house and something ominous lurks in the garden. Borgman, ever watchful, starts to infiltrate Marina's dreams. "Couldn't you come back in another capacity?," she implores. "I could," he replies, "...but it will have consequences." Thus, Borgman's enigmatic presence ripples through their lives, a chilling reminder that not everything is as it seems.
