Plot

In the quaint backdrop of a traditional south Indian village, the seeds of an unconventional love story take root. Shekar, a Hindu lad, and Shaila, a Muslim maiden, find their hearts entwined, defying the religious taboos that mold their community. The lovers elope to the bustling city of Mumbai, where Shekar carves out a career as a reporter for a prominent newspaper and Shaila embraces the warmth of their home. Their love blossoms into twin boys, a symbol of their united worlds. However, the tranquility of their life is disrupted when their families choose to reconcile, a decision that is short-lived as the dark clouds of religious conflict loom over Mumbai. The city, once their sanctuary, plunges into chaos with the eruption of Hindu-Muslim riots in the wake of the Babri Masjid demolition. The couple is wrenched apart from their children, their haven pillaged by violence, claiming the lives of both grandfathers. Amidst the turmoil, Shekar's role as a reporter gains a grim significance as he finds himself interviewing politicians and police, bearing witness to the divisive forces tearing his city apart. A resonant undertone permeates the narrative, urging the audience to identify as Indians first, transcending the boundaries of religion. The tale culminates in a desperate quest to reunite their fractured family. Searching through hospitals, morgues, and shelters, they eventually find their way back to each other. Yet, the scars of violence linger on, leaving a haunting impression on the minds of their innocent children. 'Bombay' is a poignant exploration of love, resilience, and identity set against the backdrop of communal strife.
