Plot

In the throes of the combative 2004 election, John Logue, a 28-year-old graphic designer and fervent Democrat based in San Francisco, devotes his time to the John Kerry/John Edwards campaign, fueled more by his vehement disdain for George W. Bush and Dick Cheney than his political leanings. Living his political and social ideals down to the minutiae of his everyday life, from his choice of purchases to his dining preferences, John also voices his passionate convictions on his popular online blog, the Donkey Revolution. In a moment fueled by alcohol and frustration, John publicly vows to relocate to Canada if Bush secures victory in the election. His pledge not only gains televised attention but also the expectation of his friends for him to uphold his promise when the election results favor Bush. With his old job and his girlfriend evaporating into the past, John grudgingly decides to stand by his pledge and sets his sights on Winnipeg. There, he plans to meet Gloria O'Neill, who runs a unique organization geared towards pairing Americans with potential Canadian spouses to secure their Canadian citizenship. Seeking a partner for the journey, John advertises for a travel companion willing to share the driving duties. Among the respondents, he chooses Chloe Hamon, a young woman with a nose ring and a vague explanation for her interest in the trip. Although attracted to her, John is more intrigued by her secretive motivations. As the duo ventures closer to the Canadian border, and upon reaching Winnipeg, they are confronted with unexpected realities about their lives and the city that promised refuge. Enigmatic secrets unravel one at a time, causing John and Chloe to question their decisions and the effectiveness of their intended political statement. Amidst echoes of the Vietnam war and the strange assortment of Canadians eager to assist U.S. expatriates, John and Chloe must determine whether Winnipeg, or their escape itself, holds the answers they seek.
