Plot

Set in the heart of the Bronx, brothers Louis De Coco, affectionately known as Chubby, and Tommy De Coco, navigate life under the unspoken rules of their Italian immigrant heritage. Solidarity, machismo, and traditional family roles of their working-class community are the threads stitching together their reality. The brothers, both immersed in the construction industry, dedicate their lives to the well-being of their families, despite the unseen turmoil bubbling beneath the surface. The hardship within their family manifests most notably in Tommy's youngest son, Albert, who grapples with an eating disorder. His anorexia, a reflection of the unaddressed family tension, is largely overlooked, as the family struggles to acknowledge it. Simultaneously, Tommy's eldest son, Tommy Jr., known as Stony, stands at the crossroads of life after high school graduation. Raised in the shadow of his father and uncle, Stony's been dating a wild girl named Cheri, following the family's tradition of sowing wild oats before settling down. However, he yearns to break free from the predestined path laid out for him, rejecting the notion of becoming an electrician like his father. Instead, he envisages a future working with children. A sympathetic doctor offers Stony a lifeline, a chance to explore his passion by working as a children's recreational assistant at a hospital. This deviation from his father's expectations creates a rift, as Tommy views such work as feminine. Stony, caught in a tug-of-war between familial loyalty and personal ambitions, must decide his destiny. His new girlfriend, Annette, who has navigated her own stormy waters of adolescence, provides Stony the support and understanding he needs. As Stony grapples with the painful realization that he does not want to mirror his parents' life, it is through Annette he might find the strength to follow his heart.
