Plot
In the sun-scorched expanse of New Mexico, the solemn town Marshal, Clay Morgan, carries a dark moniker, 'Black Patch,' a haunting souvenir from the Civil War that cost him an eye. His life takes a complicated turn when an old comrade, Hank Danner, drifts into town with Helen, his wife and Morgan's former flame. When Danner is implicated in a bank heist, Morgan's duty as a lawman forces him to arrest his friend, a decision that stirs the town's underbelly.
Seeing an opportunity to seize the stolen loot, the unscrupulous saloon-owner, 'Frenchy' De Vere, orchestrates Danner's escape only to betray him with a deadly strike. With the town in turmoil, Morgan finds himself blamed for Danner's murder, though no evidence emerges to prove his guilt, and the bank's stolen fortune remains elusive.
Meanwhile, Carl, a young protege of Danner, driven by vengeance and Helen's misguided accusations, takes up Danner's gun. He hones his skills until he becomes a formidable gunman, second possibly to only one man in town - Morgan, the man he's hell-bent on bringing down.
