Beyond Tomorrow (1940)

On one fateful Christmas Eve, three well-to-do yet lonesome friends—Michael O'Brien, George Melton, and Allan Chadwick—find themselves celebrating in solitude in their grand mansion, their holiday festivities derailed by a guest's illness. These millionaire businessmen, along with their loyal butler Josef and the innkeeper Madam Tanya, hatch a curious wager to test the goodness of humanity. They toss three wallets, each containing ten dollars and a calling card, into the unforgiving winter night, hoping that their faith in mankind will be rewarded. Two out of three wallets find their way back, brought by the hopeful young singer, James Houston, and the compassionate child hospital nurse, Jean Lawrence. The pair, thrown together by the whims of fate, fall headlong into love under the watchful eyes of O'Brien, Melton, and Chadwick. The old men find their lives rejuvenated by the young lovers' vibrant energy and the mansion thrums once more with the joy of life. However, joy is fleeting. A business trip to Pittsburgh ends in tragedy when the plane carrying the three old men crashes, snuffing out their lives. Their spirits, tethered to their beloved mansion, return as ghosts, their existence known only to Josef and Madam Tanya. The spectral trio persuade Houston and Lawrence to live in their grand home, yearning for companionship beyond the grave. As Houston's singing career blossoms under the guidance of the beautiful yet ambitious music producer Arlene Terry, he becomes distanced from Lawrence. This newfound wedge between the lovers ignites the determination of the ghostly trio. They endeavor to steer the guileless Houston away from the manipulative Terry and her ex-husband, Jace Taylor, a sinking star in the world of music. The ethereal O'Brien, Melton, and Chadwick must navigate the trials of the afterlife and reunite the young couple before they are called to pass away from Earth. Will they succeed? Or is true love destined to be a casualty of ambition and manipulation? Watch as love, friendship, and the strength of human spirit collide in a tale that transcends the boundaries of life and death.
