Plot

In the captivating narrative of Bernard and Doris (2006), we witness an intriguing dance between Doris Duke, the tempestuous tobacco heiress of Duke University fame, and Bernard Lafferty, her reticent butler. When Duke dismisses her butler over a less-than-perfect cantaloupe, the stage is set for the unexpected arrival of Lafferty. Once a part of the household staff for celebrities like Liz Taylor and Peggy Lee, Lafferty carries the burden of alcoholism and is fresh from rehab. As the story unfolds, Lafferty seamlessly morphs into Duke's gay confidant. He observes and aids Duke's whirlwind life, which is filled with passionate trysts with young men, swift and astute decision-making, and a meticulous focus on managing her considerable fortune and prized orchids, all while Lafferty takes charge of her sprawling New Jersey estate. Amidst this glamour and excess, a wine cellar that promises hedonistic delight lures Lafferty back into his old habits. The question then arises: Will Lafferty manage to pick up the pieces, dust himself off, and stand by Duke when she needs him the most? The film is a riveting exploration of an unconventional pairing, a tale filled with unexpected twists, turns, and emotional highs and lows that will keep you hooked until the very end.
