It is literally in her DNA that Becca Wasserman feels comfortable and happy in her own skin, that trait and the associated chutzpah passed down to her from her supportive mother, Amanda Wasserman, and Becca's maternal Nana. In turn, Becca tries to instill a sense of being oneself to her fourth grade students, who sometimes try to be someone who they aren't in celebrity or model idolization. It is all these traits that made Becca's fiancé, karaoke bar owner Adam Lopez, fall in love with her. In running into Libby Leslie, an adversary from high school, Libby who is entering the local Pittsburgh beauty pageant circuit, Becca, who with Adam are short on funds for their wedding, comes up with the idea to enter the neighborhood Squirrel Hill beauty pageant in order to win the associated trip to Hawaii for their honeymoon. Entering the pageant is despite Becca, a short, plus-sized woman, not being the stereotypical beauty pageant Barbie doll. For the first time in their lives, Amanda can't support Becca in this venture in fearing Becca being hurt by those Barbies and their entourages ridiculing her. But as Becca goes through the process, she begins to lose sight of the reason she is doing it in trying to be just like the "Barbies" around her.
