Be-Shaque (1981)

In the tranquil heart of rural India resides Shyam Sunder, a wealthy yet tormented soul, living under the care of his widowed step-mother, Nirmala. Shyam leads a life marred by alcoholism and womanizing, often disappearing into the ether without a trace, only to return in search of money from Nirmala. The village is sent into a whirlwind of shock when Lucky, a local, reports sighting Shyam's lifeless body. Nirmala calls upon the police, but they find nothing more than the remains of a bear, leading to the conclusion that Shyam may have slipped away to Goa unnoticed. Amidst this chaos surfaces a young man named Prakash, claiming to be the offspring of the Tehsildar of Lucknow, Somshekhar. He introduces himself to Nirmala as Shyam's confidante and business ally, and a scribe by trade. Welcomed into Nirmala's sprawling abode, he soon relocates to the guest house, where he crosses paths with Roopa, a woman of humble origins living with her widowed mother, Radha, and their servant, Gopal. Sparks fly between Prakash and Roopa, leading to a blossoming romance that finds approval in the eyes of Radha. However, Prakash's paradise is short-lived. He stumbles upon a photograph of Roopa with a mysterious man and a child cradled in her arms, shaking the foundations of his newfound love. Furthermore, whispers of a deserted house harboring a dreadful secret send chills down his spine. As Prakash embarks on a quest to unravel the mysteries surrounding Roopa, the unidentified man, the eerie house, and Shyam's unsettling disappearance, he remains oblivious to the watchful eyes of the village dwellers - one of whom harbors lethal intentions towards him.
