Barbarella (1968)

In the farthest reaches of futuristic time, circa 40,000, celestial astronaut Barbarella embarks on a mission shrouded in mystery and danger. Entrusted by the President of Earth, she is tasked with finding the illustrious scientist Durand Durand, who has alarmingly vanished in the Tau Ceti region. The stakes are high, as Durand Durand is the mastermind behind the Positronic Ray, a weapon of unimaginable power that could spell disaster if it falls into nefarious hands. A twist of fate sees Barbarella crash-landing on the frozen expanse of Lythion, where danger lurks in the form of dolls with razor-sharp teeth. Salvation comes in the guise of the rugged catchman Mark Hand, who rescues her and earns a unique reward. Guided by Mark's intel, Barbarella sets her course towards the City of Night, Sogo, a city infamous for birthing a new sin every hour and Durand Durand's last known location. Barbarella's journey is a sensual odyssey through a cosmos crawling with peril. Along the way, she encounters the Excessive Machine, an instrument of pleasure that can be deadly in the wrong hands, particularly those of Durand Durand. She crosses paths with a lesbian queen who brings fantasies to life in her ominous Chamber of Dreams, and a collective of women who extract the Essence of Man through a colossal hookah, with the victim trapped in a glass globe. In the heart of Sogo's darkness, Barbarella forms an unlikely alliance with the blind angel Pygar, challenging the Black Queen and her horrifying devices of sexual torture. From her scanty attire to her fearsome adversaries, Barbarella's journey is a spectacle of spellbinding special effects and tantalizing twists. As she battles her way through this erotic galaxy, she is driven by one goal: to prevent Durand Durand from crowning himself lord of Sogo and endangering Earth. But will she succeed, or will she become another casualty of pleasure and power?
