In the pulsating heart of London, J.D. Everleigh, a prosperous American, acquires a rare stamp from the mysterious Geoffrey Blake, purportedly representing the interests of Robert Coburn, a renowned stamp agent. Swirling doubts about the stamp's authenticity lead Everleigh to enlist the services of private detective Tom Martin. Armed with his keen intellect and assisted by the reformed rogue, Barney Wilson, Martin delves into the underbelly of London's stamp trading world. His investigations reveal that the authentic stamp is in the guarded possession of Lady Hawksley, a noblewoman who stubbornly denies him a glimpse of the coveted item. Caught in the web of intrigue, Martin strikes an unlikely camaraderie with Jean Larson, Lady Hawksley's secretary. He discovers that Blake, the initial seller, is a wayward nephew of Lady Hawksley, adding another layer to the web of deceit. As the plot thickens, murder seeps into the narrative, and Martin stumbles upon a trail of clues that paint a chilling picture. The shadowy figures he encounters all seem to be entwined in a labyrinth of stamp counterfeiting, leaving him and Everleigh knee-deep in an intricate plot of forgery and murder.
