Bandhan (1969)

In the remote corners of India, Jeevanlal, a thief by trade, resides with his family - his dutiful wife Sita, their son Dharmchand, and their daughter Meena. His life is drastically altered when, after stashing stolen goods with his son Dharm, the authorities descend upon their home. In a surprising act of integrity, Dharm surrenders the stolen items, leading to Jeevanlal's arrest and subsequent imprisonment. Years pass, and tensions surge between the now-adult Dharm and his embittered father. A heated argument over selling their family cow escalates into violence, with Jeevanlal raising a hand against his son. Dharm’s defensive retaliation prompts Sita to chide him, demanding he leave their home. With a heavy heart, Dharm departs for Bombay, finding work with a building contractor. He diligently sends his earnings to his mother, maintaining a solitary, modest life in the bustling city. A letter, promising his return home, sends Sita to the bus station, only to find that Dharm has already reached their home. The sight that greets her there is chilling – Jeevanlal's lifeless body in a pool of blood, with Dharm standing over him, an axe gleaming ominously in his hand. The police arrive, and Dharm is taken into custody. As Dharm faces trial, the mystery surrounding the tragic event unfolds. A chilling truth lurks beneath the surface, one that will reveal the dire circumstances that drove a son to take such a desperate action against his own father.
