Plot

In the lawless town of Deadwood, the Bella Union saloon's proprietor, Bob Holliday (Broderick Crawford), dispatches his younger sibling, Jim Holliday (Robert Stack), to escort their childhood friend, Anne Grayson (Ann Rutherford), from St. Louis, Missouri. However, the riverboat journey back to Deadwood kindles an unexpected romance between Jim and Anne, culminating in a secret wedding. Bob's shock upon discovering their union sparks a downward spiral into drunkenness, leading him into the clutches of the merciless Jack McCall (Lon Chaney, Jr.), only to be rescued by the mysterious Jane (Frances Farmer), a woman secretly harboring feelings for him. Bob's bitterness drives him to join forces with McCall's renegades, who, masquerading as Indians, pillage the town's stagecoach gold shipments, aided by the duplicitous local stagecoach agent, Ransome (Bradley Page). As lawlessness reigns, the town's leading citizens seek to appoint a marshal. When Wild Bill Hickok declines the position, Bob cunningly proposes Jim, hoping his unqualified brother might meet an unfortunate end, leaving Anne a widow. Jim's attempt to arrest McCall goes awry, but a clue pointing to Bob's involvement in the robberies emerges. As Jim grapples with suspicions about his brother, the town plunges into chaos with McCall's murder of Hickok and an impending attack by the Sioux, alerted by Jane's interpretation of smoke signals. Amid the turmoil, Jim sends Hurricane Harry (Fuzzy Knight), the stagecoach driver, to summon General Custer (Addison Richards) and his 7th Cavalry troopers. As the town braces for the Sioux onslaught, Bob, McCall, and their gang, under the guise of the attacking Indians, plot a daring bank heist, plunging Deadwood further into an abyss of disorder.
