Plot

In the bustling health food industry of Philadelphia, 37-year-old Kate Holbrook stands tall as the Vice-President of the renowned retailer Round Earth. Her life has been a testament to her unwavering dedication to her career. But as she begins overseeing the development of the company's flagship store on the city's Westside, she is confronted by a profound realization - she yearns for a child. However, the absence of a significant other and the unfortunate discovery of her one-in-a-million chance of conceiving naturally or via IVF due to her T-shaped uterus, sends Kate's dream reeling. The long, drawn-out process of single woman adoption presents another roadblock. In this desperate situation, she turns to surrogacy, and the vibrant Angie Ostrowiski, a South Philly working girl, becomes her improbable beacon of hope. When Angie's pregnancy is confirmed, Kate, being the meticulous executive she is, plunges into a painstakingly organized journey towards motherhood. She dives into childcare literature, obsesses over baby-proofing her apartment, and researches top-notch pre-schools. But her life takes an unexpected turn when Angie, after parting ways with her good-for-nothing husband, Carl, lands on her doorstep with no place to live. As Kate grapples with the challenges of integrating Angie into her world, a clash of personalities ensues. She perceives Angie as an uncouth, immature woman, a stark contrast to her own refined persona. Angie, however, starts seeing Kate as her new best friend, a relationship further complicated by a secretive twist tied to the pregnancy. Simultaneously, a budding romance blossoms between Kate and Rob Ackerman, a juice bar owner and former corporate lawyer, marking only the second romantic relationship in her life. The presence of a baby, especially via a surrogate perceived as 'trailer trash,' might threaten this delicate relationship. In this compelling journey, Kate and Angie navigate their differences, their secrets, and their shared anticipation for the baby's arrival. Through their tumultuous preparation, they learn valuable lessons about the essence of family and discover that sometimes, the family you create can be just as profound as the one you're born into. This heartwarming narrative is a testament to the power of resilience, the intricacies of relationships, and the beauty of unconventional paths towards parenthood.
